Journalism Scholarships from Overseas Press Club Foundation

If journalism is your passion, and you dream of becoming a foreign correspondent, there is special college journalism scholarships available for you, in addition to general scholarships for journalism students, as well as other scholarships that you may be eligible for. These special scholarships should be strongly considered and applied for.

The special scholarships are offered through the Overseas Press Club Foundation, at http://www.opcofamerica.org/overseas-press-club-foundation which was created in 1939 by some foreign correspondents who who did much of their work in New York City. Their goal was to make professional international journalism better then what it was so as to “improve the media’s understanding of international issues and to raise the quality of news-gathering efforts in covering the world”. By providing scholarships for journalism students they could fulfill their Foundation mission in journalism. The program started in 1992 and has been going strong ever since.

In the past year, twelve awards were made, in the amount of $2000 to undergraduates as well as graduate students in journalism programs that were working towards a career in foreign correspondence. Of the twelve winners, each year six of those winners are selected to travel to foreign news bureaus, such as the Associated Press or Reuters, in other countries. All travel expenses and other expenses associated with this internship, including living expenses are covered as a part of the college journalism scholarships.

Applying for the OPC Foundation journalism scholarship, the aspiring journalists must provide a cover letter, an essay, and a resume, with the application. The essay and the cover letter have very specific requirements, which can be observed on the website. It is vital that you pay special attention to these instructions.

Although the award amount may seem small, in terms of importance, it really isn’t. This special journalism scholarship is considered a prestigious award, which has helped many of today’s foreign correspondent’s start their successful careers. The internship and networking opportunities are the reason why most aspiring journalists apply for and covet one of these twelve scholarships. Also note that the OPC doesn’t just make the award and then forget all about you. They do follow your education – and later your career after you have won the scholarship for journalism, which increases your own exposure as an up-and-coming foreign correspondent.

Again, this is really one of the only journalism scholarships that is reserved specifically for those who want to be foreign correspondents, and it is very important not only in terms of being awarded funds to help pay for your college education, but also in terms of jump starting your career once you graduate.

Hispanic Journalism Scholarships

Hispanic journalism students have several different scholarship opportunities available to them, including a few nice journalism scholarships for hispanics available through the National Association of Hispanic Journalists, or the NAHJ. The NAHJ was establihed in 1984 and is a Hispanic organization with a mission to recognize and promote Hispanics in the News industry by providing a national voice fof Hispanic journalist. Their approximately 2300 members fight for fair treatment and understanding of Hispanics in the Media and fostering employment and career developement for Hispanics in the news. The NAHJ curriculum is one of providing scholarships, a newsletter, journalism workshops for students, Hispanic Journalism awards, career expo & national convention, local seminars & workshops, mid-career and qualified development programs and an online job bank. As you can see the NAHJ is well rounded in its’ support of the Hispanic community and an NAHJ scholarship is one such example of this strong support.

The main journalism scholarships for hispanics available through the NAHJ is the Ruben Salazar Scholarship Fund. Many different Hispanic scholarships are offered through this particular fund, and sometimes, the funds are matched by other sponsors as well.

In the past year, the association awarded approximately $91,000 in scholarships for hispanics. These college journalism scholarships include the Maria Elena Salinas Scholarship, in the amount of $5000, which is available to students who will pursue a career in Spanish language journalism. This hispanic scholarship includes a match of funds from the Univision Network as well.

Other journalism scholarships for Hispanics that can be applied for through the NAHJ include the Newhouse Scholarships, awarded in the amount of either $5000 or $1250, the Ford Motor Company Scholarship, awarded in the amount of $2000, the Geraldo Rivera Scholarship, awarded in the amount of $5000, the CNN Scholars Scholarship, awarded in the amount of $2000, and of course the NAHJ Ruben Salazar Scholarship, awarded in the amount of either $2000 or $1250. For some of these scholarship programs, the funds are also matched through the Ruben Salazar Fund, and some of the scholarships for journalism from the Ruben Salazar Fund are matched by the Newhouse Scholarship Fund.

Journalism scholarships through the NAHJ are available for Hispanic journalism students who plan to pursue careers in print, broadcast, photo, or even online media journalism. You must be a full time student, and attend school – or plan to attend school – in the United States or Puerto Rico. There may be additional requirements for individual scholarships as well.

If you are Gay, a Lesbian, or a Bisexual student, you are actually considered a minority, and there are LGBT scholarships available for you, based on your minority status. This is true for college journalism scholarships as well. There is one very important journalism scholarship for gay, lesbian, and bisexual students that you need to be aware of, and apply for.

This scholarship is offered by the National Lesbian and Gay Journalists Association, or NLGJA, at www.nlgja.org/students/aarons.htm. It is the Leroy F. Aarons Scholarship Award. The award amount of this journalism scholarship is $5000. The NLGJA came into existance in 1990 by Leroy F. Aarons who dedicated his life to journalism. The NLGJA is a coming together of journalist related people whose main purpose is to promote a honest unprejudiced reporting of LGBT issues in todays world. They strongly are against any type of working place bigotry directed towards people who are LGBT.

The NLGJA scholarships for journalism students is only available to United States Citizens, or permanent residents, and you must be Gay, Lesbian, or Bisexual and committed to providing fair and accurate reporting of the LGBT Community in your journalistic future.

Additionally, you can be a high school senior planning to enroll in a journalism program, or an undergraduate or graduate student in a journalism program. You must also demonstrate a passion for journalism, as well as journalistic skills to some degree.

Aside from this important journalism scholarship for LGBT students, you should also consider the essay contest offered by the Queer Foundation, which awards the winner $1000 to put towards paying for a college education. While this is not a journalism specific scholarship, it is available for LGBT students, and should be pursued. Since the Queer scholarship is an essay contest, this is right up a journalism student’s alley – writing. African Americans who plan to study journalism, or who are already studying journalism, may be eligible for several different journalism scholarships for African Americans that are awarded specifically to African Americans. Applying for these scholarships in journalism is important because they are quite lucrative, they will help to pay for your education, and while the competition is stiff, it isn’t quite as stiff as it is for general journalism scholarships, because you won’t be competing with as many applicants.

Most of the scholarships for journalism students that are available specifically for African Americans are available through the National Association of Black Journalists, at www.nabj.org/programs/scholarships. You can apply for all of the college journalism scholarships listed through the organization with just one application, which is a huge time saver. The NABJ scholarships offered each year total over $60,000 in awards, with the highest NABJ scholarship amount being $25,000.

One important difference between the NABJ scholarships and others is that you do not have to be a natural born United States Citizen. However, you do have to be attending a school in the United States. Additionally, you need to be either a graduate student, an undergraduate student, or a high school student who is about to enter college. Those who are currently in college must have at least one year of college left before receiving their degree. You must also be a member of the NABJ, with student status. Financial need will be a factor in deciding on winners.

Although there is just one application to fill out for all of the available NABJ scholarships, there are four application packets, which include your 500 – 800 word essays, your transcripts, your resume, and samples of our work, as well as the application. Previous winners of a NABJ scholarship may not reapply.

The journalism scholarships available through the National Association of Black Journalists for the 2010 year include the $2500 Allison E. Fisher Scholarship, the $2500 Carole Simpson Scholarship, the $2500 Larry Whiteside Scholarship NABJ Scholarship, the $5000 Newhouse Foundation Scholarship, the $5,000 Sports Illustrated Scholarship – and the $1250 Visual Task Force Scholarship. Program sponsors may change from year to year. Each individual NABJ scholarship will have differences in criteria so make sure you read the requirements of each carefully.

It is also important to note that individual chapters of the National Association of Black Journalists may also have their own additional African American journalism scholarship programs as well.

Journalism Scholarships for Asian Students

Students of Asian descent who have an interest in journalism should apply for journalism scholarships for Asian students, as well as all other scholarships in journalism that they may be eligible for. While there are not many Asian specific college journalism scholarships available, there are a couple that you should be made aware of.

The first is the South Asian Journalists Association Scholarship Program. Through this program, about $11,500 is awarded to undergraduate students in a journalism program, as well as graduate students. High school seniors who are about to enter a journalism program in college are also eligible to apply. There are different asian journalism scholarship awards available through this one program, and those students who show financial hardship are given preference.

Students who meet the eligibility requirements can apply if they are in Canada, the United States, or South Asia. Although preference is given to students who are of Asian descent – students from Bangladesh, India, Nepal, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Bhutan and Maldives can also apply. Additionally, students who simply show an interest in South Asia can also apply. Another source of journalism scholarships for Asian students is the Japanese American Citizens League, at www.jacl.org/edu/scholar.htm. Through this program, more than $60,000 is awarded annually, to approximately 30 students, and it is not journalism specific. These Asian scholarships are available to high school seniors, undergraduate students, graduate students, law students, and creative and performing arts students.

The scholarships for Asian offered through the JACL are non-renewable, and you must be a member of the National JACL to be eligible. Additionally, you must be or intend to be a full time student at an approved school in the United States, and you must specify the category of the scholarship that you are applying for.

As you can see, there are only a few Asian specific options available, but the ones that are available should definitely be applied for, as well as any other scholarship that you are potentially eligible for, including most other scholarships in journalism.

One such Arab journalism scholarship is the Al Muammar Scholarship for Journalism, which awards up to four students each year, in the amount of $5000 each. This college journalism scholarship is available to students of Arab descent who are studying at an American college. This award is available through the Arab American Institute, at http://www.aaiusa.org/foundation/33/scholarships#fasad.

You can also get information about the American Mideast Leadership Network Scholarship for Arab American Students, which awards students up to $3000, and is not specific to the journalism field. You can get additional information directly from the website.

The Arab Star Scholarships are journalism related, and are awarded in the about of $3000 for each year that you are in school, and includes an internship at the Arab Star in Dallas, Texas. You can call about this journalism scholarship program, and the number is 214-348-1310.

There are numerous other college scholarships for journalism students and grant opportunities available through the Arab American Institute at http://www.aaiusa.org/foundation/33/scholarships#fasad. It is important that you apply for as many of these scholarships in journalism as you are eligible for, as well as additional journalism scholarships – and other scholarships that you may be eligible for that are not descendant or major dependant. Also note that there are many journalism scholarships available for Arab students who are studying outside of the United States as well. Additionally, there are journalism scholarships available for students who are not of Middle Eastern descent, who intend to follow a career into Middle Eastern related journalism – or journalistic reporting on events in the Middle East as well.

The world has come a long way in terms of how women are viewed in the workforce. Women in journalism worked very hard to not only be accepted as the serious journalists that they are, but to break into various niches within the field of journalism as well. This is why the journalism scholarships that are available for women are so important today.

For example, one college journalism scholarship that is offered in a very tight journalism niche is the female scholarship offered by the Association for Women in Sports Media, at http://site.mawebcenters.com/awsm1/internscholar_about.html. This journalism scholarship has been offered since 1990, with more than 100 winners of the award since that time. The chosen recipients will show an interest in sports media careers, and the scholarship, worth $1000, also includes a paid internship. Applicants will be graduate or undergraduate students seeking a degree as a full-time student in a journalism related field of study.

Another important journalism scholarship for women is the New York Women in Communications Foundation Scholarship Program, at www.nywici.org/foundation/scholarships. This program includes multiple scholarships for women, and awards winners up to $10,000 per scholarship. The journalism scholarship program is open to high school seniors, undergraduate students, and graduate students. You must be a resident of New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, or Pennsylvania, but you do not have to attend a school in these states in order to be eligible. You will, however be eligible if you are not a resident of any of these states if you are attending a school in one of the five boroughs of New York City.

Additionally, the Association for Women Journalists – DFW Chapter, has several different journalism scholarships for women available, through writing competitions, which can be found at http://www.awjdfw.org/scholarships_awards.html. The award amounts for these contests will vary, depending on the contest in question. Pay special attention to the topic, the word count, and the deadline for each contest before entering.

There are numerous other college journalism scholarships available specifically for women, as well as general scholarships for journalism available for everyone that you should seek out and take advantage of.

General College Journalism Scholarships for Students

If you plan a career in journalism, you will need an education, in a good journalism program. Fortunately, there are numerous journalism scholarships available, including specialized journalism scholarships, as well as general scholarships. If you already know which direction you intend to go in your journalism career, you can apply for more scholarships. Either way, you will want to take advantage of all of the general scholarships for journalism as well.

The Association of Young Journalist and Writers Scholarships are worth $2000 each, and awarded annually. These scholarships for journalism students are available to undergraduate and graduate students, as long as they are enrolled in either journalism courses or English courses. The Persina Scholarship for Diversity in Journalism, which is awarded in the amount of $20,000, is also offered through the National Press Club, and there is only one winner annually.

The Feldman Fellowship for Graduate Studies in Journalism is available only for graduate students, to help defray the cost of graduate school. The award amount is $5000, and you must be in a graduate journalism program. This journalism scholarship is also offered by the National Press Club, at http://npc.press.org/.

There are many more general college journalism scholarships, and you should also check with the Journalism Department at the college that you will be attending to find out about school or state specific journalism scholarships as well. Don’t forget to consider choosing your journalism specialization early, so that you can apply for those specialized scholarships as well.
